Woolston loses

; Special correspondent I Wellington I Neville Petrie landed a punch right on Derek Gib-son-Smith’s head yesierday. But unfortunately for Petrie, the sport was not boxing, it was soccer. He was keeping goal for Woolston W.M.C. in its Rothmans Soccer League relegation battle with Stop Out at Te Whiti Park yesterday. With the score 0-0 with 20 minutes to play, Petrie came out of his goal to intercept a cross from the Stop Out player-cohch, Maurice Tillotson. But Tillotson’s chip, hit with the right foot (from the right wing, drifted [ away from the goal-keeper (towards the hefty striker, Gibson-Smith. ;

I Petrie attempted to punch i the ball clear but he hit Gib-son-Smith, who still managed to head the ball into the unguarded goal, to give Stop Out a 1-0 victory. While his team mates celebrated the goal GibsonSmith left the field for a couple of minutes to receive [medical attention to his head. Gibson-Smith’s goal came out of the blue, and it took the bite out of Woolston. The Christchurch side’s back four, Allan Boath, Colin Chisholm, Steve Smith and Laurie Blyth, had easily contained Stop Out’s mediocre attack. But once Woolston was a goal down, the Hutt side took control and [ mounted some promising 'moves.
