Pollution solution?
Sewage overflows into the Avon River at the Fendalton Road bridge would be stopped by a project recommended yesterday by the Christchurch Drainage Board’s works committee. Overflows this winter were caused by a lack of capacity in the pipe between a siphon under the river and the Matai Street pumping station, when the pipe was gorged with storm water.
A better pipelipe through the edge of Hagley Park would cost about $65,500, but such a route may not be possible because of legal restrictions on park use. An alternative route in Deans Avenue would cost $83,400. It was also suggested that overflow pipes under the bridge should be modified so that they could discharge below the low water level.
