Wages bill pushed up
The Christchurch City Council will face an unexpected $572,349 shortfall in its salaries budget because of recent wage increases announced by the State Services Commission. Department heads will meet this week to recommend ways to deal with extra costs. The shortfall happened mainly because the 8.8 per
cent increase granted for salaried staff, the 9.5 per cent rise for trade groups, and the 7.5 per cent increase for unskilled and some skilled groups, were backdated to October, 1977. The council’s requirements for wages and salaries will be about 16.3 per cent more than at April 1. The annual budget allowed for only a 12.5 per cent increase.
