City seeking more paid-for workers
Temporary - employment programme targets were still not being reached by the Christchurch City Council but every effort was being made, councillors were told yesterday. On Monday, 114 workers usually unemployed had jobs under the Government-paid programme. The council’s target is 178 and applications have been submitted to the Labour Department for work requiring 180 workers. The council had 119 temporary workers at the end of June. The TovVn Clerk (Mr J. H. Gray) said that the Labour Department seemed to be following its guidelines more strictly than expected when the first optimistic pre-
[dictions had been made. Originally, the council had ■ hoped to have at least 210 , temporary workers employed :i by September. Some council I departments had exceeded their original targets but not i all projects had been > approved. I
