Firemen braved choking smoke and flames in a burning Biighs Road flat yesterday in a fruitless search for a person who was believed to be inside. Neighbours who raised the alarm at 1.22 p.m. told emergency services that at least one occupant was still inside the fiercely burning flat. An ambulance was called, but a thorough search by firemen revealed that the flat was empty. Part of the roof had collapsed during the search, and firemen had been “at some risk,” according to a Fire Service spokesman. The flat, in a two-storey block at 172 Biighs Road, was gutted. None of the other flats in the block was
damaged. The fire was attended by engines from the St Albans, Harewood, and
headquarters stations. The cause had not been established by last evening.
