McLean out for test

p A Pukekohe Australia will go into the first test against the Ail Blacks without its serieswinning goal-kicker against the Welsh, Paul McLean. McLean was one of two plavers not considered for selection for the Wellington international on Saturday because of injury. He is suffering from strained medial ligaments in his right knee after he received a knock against Manawatu at Palmerston North last Saturday. The other player not considered was the Queensland full-back, Roger Gould. Gould is still recovering from the hamstring he pulled in his right leg against Hawke’s Bay at Napier last Wednesday. Paul McLean kicked 26 of Australia’s 36 points in his country’s two-test win over Wales in June.

His cousin, Peter McLean, was one of two new caps named in the test team by the side’s manager, Mr Ross Turnbull, at Pukekohe last night. The other was the New South Wales Country wing, Stephen Streeter. While the team contains six changes from the side which played in both tests against Wales there are no real surprises. Streeter

comes in for Phil Crowe, the vice-captain Ken Wright, for Paul McLean. John Hipwell for Rod Hauser, Gary Pearse for Mark Loane. Peter McLean for David Hillhouse and John Meadows for Steve Finnane. The tour committee of Mr Turnbull, the coach Mr Daryl Haberecht and captain 'Tony Shaw have opted for experienced internationals.

“We have picked a team we believe can beat the All Blacks,” Mr Turnbull said. The team is. — Laurie Monaghan. Stephen Streeter. Andrew Slack, Paddy Batch, Martin Knight, Ken Wright (vice-captain), John Hipwell, Greg Cornelsen, Tony Shaw (captain), Garrick Fay, Peter McLean. Gary Pearse, John Meadows, Peter Horton, Stan Pilecki. Reserves. — Forwards Bill Ross, Chris Handy, Keith Besomo. Backs: Rod Hauser, Bill McKid, Brendan Moon.

The notable Dunedin referee, Mr Dave Millar, will complete a notable hat-trick when he referees the first test. Mr Millar refereed the last two tests of the series between the Lions and the All Blacks last year and this will be his third consecutive test.
