Coast service gets reprieve

PA Wellington Rail passenger services to the West Coast will not be reduced for at least another year, said the Minister of Railways (Mr McLachlan) yesterday. “But he said that reduci “could well ome later — (after it has been seen how well the new trains introduced to the service are being supported.” Earlier, the Railways Department had intended to reduce the services between Christchurch and Greymouth by cutting out 13 poorly patronised services, reports Cedric Mentiplay. After considering the sub-, missions of a number of West Coast groups, however, the Government decided to maintain the present pattern of services, using converted twin-set railcars, with a further review in 12 months. Mr McLachlan said that during the 12-month period, the “sportsmen’s special” from Greymouth and Christchurch, would run only as required to service special events and holidays.
