Golf test for Mark Street

By 808 SCHUMACHER The most significant feature of the Canterbury golf team to play Mid-South Canterbury in their annual match at Ashburton on Sunday is the selection of the Flarewood junior, Mark Street, at No. 4. Obviously the selectors (Messrs M. J. McNally, H. V. I Reid and W. K. Hitchon) regard the 18-year-old Harewood No. 1 as a strong | candidate for Freyberg selection and he has the chance | to vindicate their faith on Sunday. The accomplished Street has been in excellent form this season and remains unbeaten in the Woodward Cup inter-club competition after four rounds. Earlier this year he was in the New Zealand junior side that finished second in the Australasian teams’ championship and Street made a grand contribution with five wins from six r-atches. Ahead of Street in the strong Canterbury team are three members of last year’s Freyberg team, Bruce Taylor, Geoff Saunders and Simon Robinson. There can be little doubt that they deserve to command those positions although Taylor was below his best against BullerWestland last week-end. The other two members of

the 1977 Freyberg team, Dennis Beggs and Stephen Street, are playing at five and seven, respectively. They are separated by a former Canterbury and Otago Freyberg representative, Joe Whitaker.

James Angus and Des Turner were not available for the team which is, in playing order: B. C. Taylor (captain), G. C. Saunders, S. S. Robinson, M. E. Street, D. L. Beggs, J. W. A. Whitaker, S. W. Street, J. N. Williamson, J. L. Allin, R. M. Vincent, M. G. Brown, B. K. Street, J. R. A. Parlane, L. D. McKenzie, F. J. Poskitt, S. J. Paterson. Reserves: N. L. Bain, W. I. Tucker, M. W. Small. Manager: Mr B. V. Giubb. A representative junior fixture between Canterbury and Mid-South Canterbury will also be held. The Canterbury team of eight which consists of players who have not played in the main inter-club competitions: — Neil Reid (Harewood, captain), Kerry Lake (Harewood), Mark Kibblewhite (Templeton), Gary McGarry (Waitikiri), Geoff Black (Russley), Craig McNichol (Kaiapoi), Robert Needham (Windsor), Stephen Greenall (Waimairi Beach). Reserves: Tony Samson (Avondale), David Newburn (Coringa).
