Airport building tenders go low
Christchurch could get the new international arrivals airport building fur about 20 per cent less than the City Council estimate.
A tender of $2,348,200 from the Fletcher Development and Construction Company has been accepted by a council subcommittee.
Nine contractors had bid. The highest tender was $2,532,595 — putting all tenders under the estimated cost. Only two tenders — from Timaru and Wellington — were not
from Christchurch companies. The acting chairman of the public utilities committee, Cr R. A. Bamford, said he was pleased that the contract could go to a company that would employ local labour. Subcontractors were also mainly local firms. The main terminal building at Christchurch Airport was built bv the same company. If the construction schedule goes according to contract terms, the new terminal will be completed in 16 months — by Christmas 1979.
