Kauere Lad back in favouritism

f Special Correspondent Auckland Yesterday’s rain brought Kauere Lad right back into consideration for the August Handicap at Ellerslie today. Further showers and he could well be the hardest to beat. Others in the field for the first leg, notably Evander; and Stevie Wonder, manage; soft ground w*ell enough. But ( such going is a special help to Kauere Lad wmch lacks the quickness and physique to take and hold an early position. On top of the ground Kauere Lad has to give wellnigh impossible starts but wnen heavy ground slows them down he is not nearly at the same disadvantage.

T ust three starts back Kauere Lad won a 2200 m at A ondale. He came fourth next time, over 1600 m at Tei Rapa, and sixth in his latest | a'tempt, a 2000 m at Te! Awamutu where a slow start cost him any chance he might have had. Stevie Wonder and Evander finished second and fourth respectively last time, Evander as a red-hot favourite, in the Short Handicap, a 2300 m at Pukekohe on August 5. In such form again they would surely be in the money today. Evander, right on top off winning middle-distances at; Avondale and Trentham, was;

a big disappointment at Pukekohe. Perhaps, after being allowed a little time to recover from Trentham, he was a bit underdone.

In his training meanwhile Evander has certainly seemed no worse for his Pukekohie run. The way he went last Monday suggested he was fit and altogether very well.

Evander has the top weight of 56.5 kg which is 6kg more than he had when he won at Avondale, 3kg more than his Trentham weight and half a kilogram [less than he carried at Pukekohe.

. Stevie Wonder, with 53kg, lis up half a kilogram from ’Pukekohe and Kauere Lad ■ (54.5 kg is up one kilogram ifrom the Taumarunui Cup for which the scale of ■ weights was down slightly Tram the usual. i Without enjoying over much success Stevie Wonder has raced consistently well in middle-distance attempts. He was very prominent right through the last 700 m at Pukekohe after finishing third at Avondale, behind Kauere Lad. Golden Fox is such a freegoing front runner that he will almost certainly shape up very prominently. It would be a surprise if one of the others was successful although Penrod and Hytest i have been showing fair I I form, Penrod in intermediate ’company, Hytest with a laststart third at Matamata behind Master Morgan. Form at Pukekone suggests Misty Brae and Pennvshima for the main sprint and second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Workingmen’s Centennial Club Handicap. They finished first and fourth respectively at Pukekohe, over 1200 m and seem to have trained on well enough. Oranmore was disappointing when well beaten at Pukekohe but he would need only to be somewhere near top form to win. Annasarzi and Kiewa are other prospects. The track will be soft. The weather forecast is for showers. The T.A.B. code is AR.
