Shipping News Popular Customs officer to retire
Lyttelton’s senior Customs officer.. Mr B. T. O’Rourke, will face a second retirement today — after starting at the port as one of the first preventive officers. He joined the Customs Department in 1961 after retiring from the R.N.Z.A.F., where he served for more than 20 years. In the last 18 years at Lyttelton, Mr O’Rourke has merited a good deal of popularity from all sections of the shipping industry, attributed to his ability to combine Ills official preventive duties with good public relations. “Bernie’s sense of humour has relieved the tension in many serious situations on the waterfront time and time again,’’ said one of his senior officers.
The withdrawal of the 52,000ton Nedlloyd Houtman from the New Zealand run will leave a gap in container operations at Lyttelton. A cargo decline of between 30 and 60 per cent from Europe to New' Zealand is the reported
reason for the ship’s withdraws! — initially for a six months trial — at the end of her present run to New Zealand. ARRIVALS Nil. DEPARTURES Poyang (2.55 p.m.l, 8705, Mount Maunganui. Capt. M. H. A.
