Shop workers’ pay issue hazy
Some Christchurch shop assistants will be paid during their stop-work meeting this morning.
For others the position is not <o clear, and managements are waiting to see howmany employees are involved before they make a decision. The meeting at 9 a.m. in the Avon Theatre has been called bv the Canterbury Shop Assistants’ Union to dis-: cuss remits in the next round' of award talks. Spokesmen for Haywrights. I'd. and Smiths City Market said that representatives
would attend the meeting and they would be paid. Both said the decision had been i made for this one occasion,: as it had not occurred before. A spokesman for G.U.S. Wholesalers said he expected “normal practice” would be ; followed and representatives would attend the meeting and receive normal pay. The management of Ballantynes, Ltd, was waiting
to see how many employees !would be affected before a! decision was made on their! I pay. there was comparatively; little interest among staff at! ! D.1.C.-Beaths. according to aj . spokesman, but he did not I ■know what policy’ would be! ; followed. It appeared that staff at! rhe Riccarton shops of Food-! stuffs (N.Z.), Ltd would bej paid.
