Peter Jones suspended after Kurow Cup

Special correspondent Dunedin Peter Jones was suspended from race driving until September 8 and Black Stump was disqualified from first in the Kurow Cup al Oamaru yesterdav on the grounds of interference to Cardinal King 100 m from the finish. The promoted winner was Rock On. which had made the pace from Black Stump, with Carnival King on the outside. Rock On. owned and trained at Tinwald by Cyril White, had won his previous start at Oamaru in May and he won the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes on the course as a two-year-old. An objection to Black Stump’s first placing was lodged by the stipendiary steward, Peter McKenzie. Evidence was heard from the stipendiary stewards, Jones, George Shand (Hurricane Squire) and Kerry O’Reilly (Carnival King). There was no race filming in operation at the Kurow meeting. Mr Bill Irving, the president of the chib, said’ inis was due to the nonavailability of filming operators for a Monday meeting. Jones has appealed against the suspension and the owners of Black Stump. Messrs Trevor Shirlev and his wife. Rae lee. Chris Alcock and Stewart Dermody, ot Tokanui. have appealed against the disqualification. Black Stump had been a wax from racing for 16 months after pulling a suspensory ligament in a fore !e» and he should gain compensation at short notice. Gary McDonald, the driver

of Royal Belmont in the Oamaru Handicap, was suspended until September 8, i 1978, for causing inter ference to Big Deal at the i 500 m. Honest Reply was declared ineligible to race in standing start races until September 9. He ran in badly just before the barrier was released in the Second Aviemore Handicap. Oppenhein did not have ro be driven out to win the Waitaki Hanover Slakes by a neck trotn Winning Choice, with a gap of five and a halt lengths to Avenlreux. Oppenhein, raced by Mr Michael Hines ol Las Vegas, who races this year’s Wellington and Sydney Cups winner. Good Loid, was taken to the front after 600 m by Mark Smolensk!. His stabiemate, Piato, paced roughly early, according to the trainer. Jack Smolensk!. and settled seventh, just behind Oppenhein. Plato never made anv improvement. Wing Commander clipped the sulky wheel of Trojan at the 1200 m and fell. He was taking evasive action after A eiureux had broken when free of interference and , caused the trailing horses to he slightly checked. ; Castle Derg had his first win -Ince the 1976 Sapling Stakes when he prevailed in [ a spectacular finish to the Don Memorial Handicap i Castle Derg, which is I raced by his trainer, Richard Brosnan, with his brother Tim. ran on strongly after trailing the pacemaker. Sonnelltnd. Castle Derg looks more robust this season.

Watbro did well to finish second, half a length back after racing without cover. There was three-quarters of a length to Mount Lambie, which came through on the inside. Almost in line next were Sonnellino. Uncle Andrew, Dining Out. Fallacy Rainbow, which was badly away, and Band Music. Idlemite, Redoak and Lady' Castleton had impressive wins in other races. Bob Cleave, who races her with Mr Bill Carling, of Waikouaiti, Idlemite is a four-year-old half-sister, by Local Light, to the good .winners, Armbro Lad and Armbro King. Redoak led for the last 1100 m of the Omarama Handicap and was not tested. Lady Castelton came on generously in the R A. Paterson Handicap and won by a lengt’ and a quarter from Great Way. which broke early and dropped out to third last.
