AUCKLAND ACCLAIMS LIONA BOYD Auckland has heard some of the world's greatest Guitarists over the past 20 years but none has given greater pleasure than the young Canadian, Liona Boyd. One always takes advance publicity, especially that of a Government agency, with a grain of salt, but within minutes Miss Boyd had established herself as a classical Guitarist of the first rank. Flawless technique and the art that conceals art are the Hallmarks of her play which is completely relaxed and entirely natural. Once having made the ritual obeisance to Fernado Sor and J. S. Bach, Miss Boyd went on to a programme which mixed the familiar with a number of modern works, several written for her and all good listening. One could not wish for a better performance of 'Granada' and ‘Asturias', by Albeniz, which finished the programme. And just to point up the dedication of this guitarist to the essentially musical aspects of the instrument she had stressed — Albeit unobtrusively — right through the recital. Miss Boyd produced a dazzling Virtuoso piece as an encore. Little wonder that the well-filled Concert Chamber gave her a tremendous reception. This is playing not to be missed.
