Sir, — Canon Machel’s championship of the New Zealand New Liturgy would be more convincing if the New Liturgy had filled the churches. He quotes C. S. Lewis on the subject of English useage — a charming quotation. But Lewis was not, in that context, referring to church services. On that subject he said (in “Letter to Malcolm”): “The service should be loved and familiar, otherwise the worshipper tends to lose touch with God. He is more likely to be saying to himself, ‘What on earth is he up to now?” Perhaps one day the New Zealand New Liturgy might become loved and familiar. At the moment, it is as welcome to me and thousands like me as if we were to go to see “Hamlet” and he fobbed off with a reading of “Lamb’s Tales.” — Yours, etc., RUTH RAMSAY, Hope. August 12, 1978.
