Balloon aloft

NZPA-Reuter New Bedford (Massachusetts)

Three Americans trying for the first balloon crossing of the Atlantic ocean have travelled 650 km on the first day of their voyage, a spokesman said yesterday. Speaking from a weather tracking station, the spokesman said the first day had gone almost perfe -tly. “We’re as optimistic as you can be with almost 3000 miles to go,” he said. He said that at 10.58 a.m. (N.Z. time) the balloon had

passed over Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, heading -eastwards at an altitude of 2000 m. The New Mexico team — Max Anderson, aged 43, Ben Abruzzo, aged 47, and Lawrence Newman, aged 31 — had lifted off in their 11-storey-high, Helium-filled craft from Presque Isle, Maine. The spokesman said the only danger the trio faced so far was sunburn.

He added that the speed, an average of about 25km/h, was slow, but expected.
