The eightieth anniversary of the first pigeon flights from Great Barrier Island to Auckland, and the first airmail service in the world, was marked on Saturday by the release of 200 pigeons from the Philatelic Centre in Worcester Street. The occasion also marked the beginning of Stamp Week. Mr Gerry Snippers (left) and Mr Tony Wilson are shown releasing some of the pigeons after they had been banded with “flimsies” or messages.
