Birth-rate falls for two years
PA Weilingtqn Live births registered in the year ended June 30, 1978, were 52.490 compared with 55.165 for 1977 and 55,470 for 1976, said the Government Statistician (Mr E. A. Harris) in a statement. The annual birth rate per 1000 mean population was 16.77 in the latest June year, compared with 17.66 for 1977 and 17.87 for 1976. For the quarter ended June, 1978, the equivalent annual birth rate per 1000 mean population was 15.82, compared with 16.81 and 16.88 for the June quarters of 1977 and 1976 respectively. Live births in the latest June quarter were 756 fewer than for the June quarter, 1977. There were 25.476 deaths registered in the year ended June 30, 1978, compared with 25,996 for 1977 and 25,403 for 1976. The annual death rate per 1000 mean population was 8.14 in the latest June vear, compared with 8.32 for 1977 and B.lb for 1976. The equivalent ■ annual death rate per 1000 mean population in the June quarter was 7.97, compared with 9.57 and 8.42 for the corresponding quarters in 1977 and 1976 respectively. Natural increase, that is, the excess of births over deaths, contributed 27,014 to the population gain in the year ended June 30, 1978,“ compared with 29,169 in the previous June year and 30,067 for the year ended June, 1976.
