Defence White Paper sought

From CEDRIC MENTIPLAY The Army Association Council is keen to see the White Paper on Defence — promised before the end of 1977 — published as soon as possible. The council agreed at its annual meeting _ that Government decisions should be made public as soon as possible, and decided to write to the Minister of Defence (Mr McCready) • emphasising that point and asking that he meet the council and discuss the paper and its implications as soon as practicable. Major-General R. D. P. Hassett, retiring Chief of the General Staff, addressed the meeting at Fort Dorset, Wellington, describing improved conditions of service in the Army and outlining its future.

The council commended the Army for the vigorous and wholehearted effort it had put 'into the Army Memorial Museum scheme under the leadership of Major-General Hassett. The project had been well received both by the public and within 'the Army, indicating a positive future for the service, it said. The council noted an Improvement in the Army’s housing over the last year, but was concerned that the building programme was not keeping up with obsolescence. It decided to ask the Minister of Defence for greate effort in this matter. The meeting, where delegates from Army associations in various regions were represented, unanimously re-elected Lieuten-ant-General Sir Leonard Thornton as president of the executive council.
