Clean air for runners
Competitors in the marathon on Saturday, August 12, (N.Z. time) will not be troubled by car exhaust fumes as they were in the Christchurch Commonwealth Games event four years ago. Three small battery powered cars have been hired to pace the competitors in Edmonton and to carry scrutineers. The Games rules now stipulate that no vehicle emmiting fumes can be used among the competitors. The cars, which are bright yellow, can reach speeds of about 48km/h and have a range of about 80km on a charge. They are "refuelled” by plugging into an ordinary wall plug for six hours.
