Cut-price container link planned
The present Tasman service from Lyttelton may give exporters a link with a new cutrate container service to Europe before the end of the year. The new. non-Conference service is being started by the Belgian shipping magnate, Mt T. Rosenfeld, from Australia in September. Mr Rosenfeld has close associations with Thomas Nationwide Transport and Maritime Carriers, NZ, Ltd. and Thomas Nationwide has been appointed agent for his company, Antwerp Bulk Carriers. A monthly sendee is planned, and freight rates should be about 20 per cent below existing rates. Mr Rosenfeld has access to a service across the Tasman by either his interest in Maritime Carriers, or through the Union Steam Ship Company. He has a 24.9 per cent shareholding in Maritime Carriers, a company which started a container service to Australia four months ago. The Thomas Nationwide link with the Union company could provide the other link, because the Union company has alreadv trans-shipped containers across the Tasman from New Zealand to the Middle East. Mr Rosenfeld is building four new part-bulk, part-container ships, for JUSIIOM each. Two, De Loris and Helen, are almost completed. The round-the-world route for the new service will include Ant-
werp, Southampton, Sydney, Melbourne, Fremantle and return by North America. ARRIVALS Saturday Baron Pentland (9.9 a.m.), 16,884, Christmas Island, Capt. D. Sinclair (BP Comm).
