Hospital Board planning

Sir, — Mrs Clark informs us that the North Canterbury Hospital Board is failing as a result of “piecemeal planning.” “lack of information,” and “sloppy-minded thinking.” She describes the board’s attitude to publicity and information as “almost Victorian.” If her analysis of the board’s problems is accurate she does the Victorians a serious injustice. Whatever humbug characterised that era, a lack of free information and robust debate, was not part of it. Thomas Wakley founded “The Lancet,” and its pungent commentaries and incisive analysis unfolded an indictment of the quality of medical education, and the structure of medical services. Mrs Clark would do well to encourage these Victorian attitudes in the board. — Yours, etc., JOHN MORTON. July 27, 1978.
