Railway cuts
Sir, — The article by Garry Arthur (“The Press,” July 27) is appropriate, and no indictment would be severe enough to censure this Government’s policy on railway transport. Mr Roscoe’s opinion is shared by plenty — i.e. the purpose and realities of a railway system, particularly its function to the ordinary traveller, who prefers the official way, to motorways, highways, and byways now being used by some drivers who have little respect for other road users. “Off-shore” finance to a greater extent than obvious is a major influence and contributor to rhe pruning of our railway system. Mr Finlayson rightly advocates the building of new passenger stock in our workshops; we may have to sooner than we realised. We will be glad to have the workshops we have in the not too distant future. — Yours, etc.,
P. M. CURRIE. July 27, 1978.
