Engineers may take action
Canterbury engineers may take industrial action next week if the Government has not changed technical anomalies in the recent general wage order. This was decided by a meeting of the executive of the Canterbury branch of the Engineers’ Union on Thursday.
The branch secretary (Mr R. J. Todd) said that no action would be taken until after the Cabinet had discussed the anomalies. If the Government’s attitude was not changed, the executive would meet again
and decide what action to take.
The executive emphasised that any action would not be directed at employers, but Mr Todd would not say what action might be taken. The director of the Canterbury Employers’ Association (Mr N. M. West) said that the association had been inundated with requests from employers seeking guidance on implementation of the order. A number of firms had decided not to pay the orders until the situation had been clarified.
