Union delays ballot
PA Wellington Another trade union has taken action to halt a Labour Department ballot on compulsory membership. The Photo Engravers’ Union has filed an application with the Supreme Court to have its planned ballot declared invalid.
The union says that the ballot should be scrapped be-
cause the Minister of Labour (Mr Gordon) did not give the Federation of Labour reasons or enough time for consultation before starting the poll. A heavy backlog at the Court means that neither the photo engravers’ nor the freezing industry clerical workers cases are likely to be settled for months — possibly until after the November General Election.
