Internal Affairs future ‘unsure’
PA Wellington Uncertainty still surrounds the future of the Internal Affairs Department and its administrative viability, according to the department’s former secretary, Mr P. J. O’Dea.
In his last report to Parliament after 29 years in the department, Mr O’Dea said it was regrettable that several changes proposed by the State Services Commission after a thorough study had been deferred.
Mr O’Dea said the study suggested the department should be strengthened and broadened to include a greater range of functions
with a common core of com* munity development.
“The decision not to implement the proposed changes leaves the situation in the unresolved position it was some months ago,” Mr O’Dea said. “The uncertainty surrounding the future of the department and its administrative viability remains. It is my earnest hope that any changes proposed in the future will be dealt with in terms of the whole machinery of Government findings and not be proceeded with independently and in an un-co-ordinated and unplanned way,” he said.
