Talks on Indonesia

A New Zealander working in Indonesia, the Rev. Dr lan Cairns, has returned to New Zealand to give the Bums lectures at the University of Otago. Dr Cairns is in Christchurch this week-end lecturing to the Theological Society on his work in Indonesia.

In 1960 after completing his education at Otago and Edinburgh universities, Dr

Cairns went to Bandung, Indonesia (West Java) where he founded a student centre.

Eight years later he returned to Edinburgh to do a Ph.D. in old Testament studies with some studies in Islamic. Dr Cairns then returned to Indonesia, taking a position in Jogyakarta as head of the theological college. The college was most concerned in making studies

relevant to the life of rural Indonesians. Students were taken to factories and put to work for a week or two to give them a better idea of how rural people lived. Aristarchus Sukarto, a 30-year-old Indonesian has been sent to train at Otago University and will be ready to take over from Dr Cairns in 1980 when he and his family return to New Zealand.
