Prices improve at national Angus sale
Special corres. Palmerston North The fifty-eighth Angus national sale held at Palmerston North was one of the best of recent years: 74 bulls were sold at an average of $2400. Top price was $12,000 paid by the estate A. Holden, Dannevirke, for a bull from the Te Ohu stud, Dannevirke; and $ll,OOO was paid by Mangatu Blocks Incorporated, Gisborne, for an entry from Matanuku Farms, Whangarei. „ Seven other bulls made saooo or more, and only five were passed in unsold. A Feilding breeder. K. J. Clinton, did well in the presale show, exhibiting the champion bull to tvin the Angus Association sash, the Bank of New South Wales cash award for best bull, and the Borthwick Cup for the best pen of four bulls. He also secured top average price of $4112 for four bulls. The next best average was $3200 received bv Ranui Holding, Te Puke, for four bulls, and H. F. Saunders, $2750, for six bulls. The prize list was:—
1 Champion bull: R. J. Clinton (Feilding); reserve champion, Matanuku Farms (Whangarei). Led bull: Ranui Holdings (Te Puke) 1, L. M. Baldwin (Tuakau). Unled bull: Matanuku Farms 1, Merchiston estate (Marton) 2. Pen of four bulls: R. J. Clinton 1, H. F. Saunders (Tirau) 2, Rangitira partnership (Gisborne) 3. Pair unled bulls: R. J. Brown (Kiwitea) 1, R. A. Brbwn (Feilding) 2, Merchiston estate (Marton) 3. South Island sales of interest included: A. J. and D. K. McKenzie Foundation (Ashburton) sold one bull at $800; D. W. J. Gould (Christchurch) bulls at Sl2OO, $llOO and $1000; F. A. Elliott (Blenheim) one bull at $2OOO. Purchases were: Masefield estate (Kekerangu), one bull at $5OOO from Ranui Holdings (Te Kuiti), the first-prize led two-year bull; C. W. Hames (Sherwood Downs. Fairlie), one bull at $2lOO from the secondprize pen of four bulls shown by H. F. Saunders (Tirau); Wayne Chisnell (Christchurch), one bull from L. Johnstone <Te Puke) at $3OOO.
