St Albans to get a new exchange
The St Albans telephone exchange will be replaced with modern equipment of larger capacity. Approval in principle for the project has been given by the Postmaster-General (Mr Wilkinson). The present equipment cannot be extended and
the brick portion of the present exchange building — built in 1916 — is near the end of its life. When the new exchange is brought into service during 1981, the present equipment will be recovered and used at other exchanges. The project is expected to cost $1,754,000.
