Newsprint price review
The New ZeaL’.-'d Newspaper Publishers’ Association, and Tasman has agreed to six-monthly reviews of the newsprint supply, and price, and a review is taking place at present, former chairman of Tasman (Mr J. C. Fletcher) said at the annual meeting. In recent years the company’s earnings, in relation
to turnover and capital invested, had been quite inadequate, and one of the principal reasons had been the “unsatisfactory outturn” of two term contracts. One of the contracts was due to expire in December (presumably that with Bowater Corporation). The other was w' h the N.P.A. and this does not expire until Decern l ber, 1983.
Some, increase on the N.P.A. newsprint contract price had been granted by the publishers and, while this assistance was acknowledged, there still was a wide discrepancy between the price charged by Tasman, and the cost of news- ]. nt from overseas sources, said Mr Fletcher.
