Coal sale ‘not viable’
PA Auckland Little progress has been made in the last financial year in further development of the proposed mining and export to Japan of coking coal from Mount Davy in Westland. According to N.Z. Forest Products annual report (the company has a 40 per cent interest in West Coast Resources, Ltd) coking coal prices remain at*
tractive, but the conditions laid down by the New Zealand Government are “unduly onerous.” These, the report says, include a levy on each tonne of coal mined, which would mean the project would not be viable. Discussions are reported to be continuing with the Government and with the Japanese interests.
