The prototype of the maritime reconnaissance version of the first F27 flew in March, 1976. Outwardly it is similar to the airliner version, except for the radar radome under the fuselage. It is being promoted as an economical civil maritime patrol aircraft. It is believed that two such aircraft have been sold to Peru.
