“National” days

Sir, — Helen Hervey (July 15) speaks of “national’* days, tiddley-winks and public censure. How much better if she had spoken more forthrightly of biue-jeans day, homosexuality and unjustified social stigma. Her theorising could then have been put into proper perspective. Then she might have been seen to be less concerned for “unsuspecting members of the public” and more concerned for the “totally unfair” oppression of a significant section of the same public, who have* no interest in the lifestyles with which the majority unwittingly comply. Of course it is a gimmick, but education can be fun, even when the subject is a * serious one. The serious intention here is to see that public censure and disrepute is properly directed — that is upon those who judge and stigmatise on the basis of appearances without considering the validity of their actions or the harm done thereby. — Yours, etc., ROY WILSON. July 16, 1978.
