Wata Devil third

NZPA Melbourne The New Zealand horse, , Wata Devil having his first | start in a steeplechase let down his backers when he could finish only third in the Victorian Steeple at Moonee Valley on Saturday. The race was won by Spearwood, which was well backed at .3 to 1, by a length and a half from Star Status (16 to .1), with Wata Devil (10 to 9) one length and three-quarters away, third. Wata Devil gained a place in the field when he schooled twice over the Moonee Valley fences during the week. j His jockey, Dick Walsh,

who travelled from New Zealand to ride him, said the horse handled the fences without any worries but he was badly in need of a run. Wata Devil careered along in fourth place and appeared to be doing it comfortably, with Spearwood out in front of Star Status and Heroic Speech. Approaching the 400 m mark Kelvin Burke on Spearwood opened up a break which forced Walsh to go after him on Wata Devil. Spearwood drifted right off the track from the turn to the last jump and Wata Devil was caught on his outside. Star Status went through the inside.
