NZPA-Reuter Jakarta Indonesia’s Ambassador Papua New Guinea in hot Major-General Busjiri, has confirmed that Indonesian troops have occasionally crossed the border into Papua-New Guinea in hot pursuit of Iriane. .• rebels fighting for independence. General Busjiri said that the border between Irian Jaya (formerly Dutch New Guinea) and Papua New Guinea was not clearly marked and that the Government in Port Moresby had expressed full understanding for the occasional intrusions on its territory in the last few weeks. The plight of West Irianese refugees who have fled to Papua New Guinea, will be reviewed at a meeting between Papua New Guinea’s Foreign
Minister (Mr Ebia Olewale) and a high-ranking United Nations official, it was reported from Port Moresby.
The Asian representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Mr R. Sampatkuniar) has been visiting border villages and a mission in Papua New Guinea, where the latest influx of about 400 refugees are being cared for. These people fled their homes in the northern border areas of Irian Jaya r- the last week to escape bombing, strafing, and military searches.
Indonesia has directed these actions against separatists who are holding seven Indonesian hostages they seized almost two months ago.
