Hororata date change

From J. J. BOYLE Wellington The Hororata Racing Club will stage its autumn meeting next season on Friday, March 23, a fortnight later than was originally scheduled. Against an objection from Wairio, which is to race

the next day, Hororata’s new date was approved at the annual general meeting of the New Zealand Racing Conference yesterday.

Hororata will be racing against Te Aroha on March

The conference president, Mr Arthur Hughes, said yesterday that March next year had become a difficult month because direct clashes between the Wellington Racing Club’s Centennial meeting and the Inter-Dominion Trotting Championships had to be avoided. The South Canterbury Jockey Club failed yesterday in an effort to have the “restricted programme” tag taken from its racing date on September 5 this year. Mr Aspinall said South Canterbury wduld be racing against Wellington trots and would be unable to muster much public interest without being able to cater for better-known horses in the double races.

Mr Aspinall was told by an Auckland district delegate that restricted programmes were being used to good effect by Auckland and Waikato clubs. But when it was first proposed that there should be such meetings many more clubs would have applied for them if they had thought they would be allowed to cater for higher graded horses as South Canterbury sought to do.
