PA Wellington More than SI7M additional tax was found by tax inspectors after audits and investigations in the last financial year. Additional income found by inspectors totalled $42,737,485 and the extra tax assessed totalled $17,705,438 said the Commissioner of Inland Revenue (Mr T. M. Hunt) in the Inland Revenue Department’s report tabled in Parliament. Extra income detected as a result of desk audits, field audits, and investigations by district office audit sections and inspectors was $35,500,957 and the additional tax assessed was. $14,357,408. Investigations by specialist inspectors in head office produced extra income tax of $3,384,030

from additional income of $7,236,528. In the previous taxation year, taxable income was understated by $35,132,176 and the additional income tax assessed $14,127,148. Mr Hunt said in this year’s report that the rea suits of the investigations were satisfying but further coverage was desirable. “There is a backlog of cases noted for fraud investigation,” he said. Use of the department’s computer helped the inspectors in the work of catching tax evaders. “The matching of employee’s tax certificates with copies from their employers for the detection of undeclared salary and wages has proved valuable as an aid to compliance and has resulted in substantial revenue being collected,” said Mr Hunt.
