Boat saved in storm
Wind gusting up to 6# knots battered Kaikoura yesterday. At 1 p.m. yesterday the wind was still blowing at a steady 50 knots but died down later in the afternoon. No damage was reported, but the Kaikourabased fishing boat Narina was lucky to weather the storm. She had broken her moorings and the gale was threatening to wash her up on the beach. However, Mr L. Baxter, who was running for port in the Compass Rose, noticed the Narina in time. He picked up the owner (Mr A. Fishbum) from the wharf and went to the aid of the drifting boat. Mr Fishburn leapt on to the Narina when the two boats were close but slipped and fell into the sea. He managed to scramble on board and attach a line. Mr Baxter then towed the Narina to the safety of South Bay. Several boats were out fishing when the gale struck but all were able to make their way back to shelter.
