University pay ratio
Salaries accounted for nearly 75 p?r cent of spending by New Zealand universities last year, the University of Canterbury Council was told.
It was therefore imperative to look' closely at staffing when considering expenditure control, said tfie ViceChancellor (Professor A. D. Brownlie).
Expenditure by the University of: Canterbury last year l was just over SISM, of which about $10.9M went on salaries. Maintenance and servicing of buildings and site took about SI.6M, departmental and equipment grants just over SIM, general expenses almost $960,000, and a library' grant $538,500. Of this expenditure, about $13.5M had come from Government grants, said Professor Brownlie.
