An artist’s impression of a solar generating station which is expected to De in use near Barstow, California, by 1981. It is being developed by the McDonnell Douglas Company to produce 20,000 kilowatts of electricity. The power tower will stand 86 metres in height. It will absorb sunlight beamed at it from 1500 circular computerised sun-tracking mirrors. Reflected sunlight will heat boiler tubes giving steam to power ground-based turbines.
