Teeing off in Fiji
The New Zealand entry in the Fiji golf open is increasing every year and the country is again well represented in the men's and women’s tournaments in Suva in July and August. Sponsored by Air New Zealand, the women’s tournament will be held from July 28 to 30 and the men’s tournament from August 4 to 7. The men’s entry is spearheaded by the Pacific Harbour champion, Bill Brask (United States), the inaugural winner of the Airlines Classic, and George Serhan (Australia), the title-holder. Prominent New Zealand professionals entered include Barry Vivian, Alan Snape, Terry Kendall and Stuart Reese. A former international and New Zealand amateur champion, Ted McDougall, is in the field. An accomplished golfer in the women’s field is the present national matchplay champion, Kaye Maxwell, of Auckland. The 22-year-old Auckland No. 1 led her province to victory in the national Russell Grace tournament in Christchurch last month. Since last year’s event, a new club-house has b_een built at the Fiji club’s Samabula course and the facilities are believed to be excellent. A number of events for long-handicap golfers and special social gatherings are being planned.
