Wool returns down 15 p.c.

PA Wellington Farmer wool auction returns were 15 per cent down in the first 11 months of the latest season compared with the previous season, in spite of a decline of less than 1 per cent in the quantity of wool by weight sold by auction.

Wool Board statistics show that auction returns for the 11 months ended May 31 were $369.8M compared with $433.03M in the 11 months ended May 31, 1977. Wool auctioned in the 11 months totalled 1.26 million bales of greasy wool and 32,612 bales of scoured wool compared with 1.24 million bales of greasy wool and 29,998 bales of scoured wool in the first 11 months of the previous season. The average auction price for greasy wool in the 11 months was 189.98 c a kilogram compared with 221.14 c a kilogram in the previous season.

Wool sold by private sale in the 10 months to April 30 was 14 per cent more than in the first 10 months of the previous season. Private sales in the 10 months totalled 297,343 bales compared with 293,336 bales in the previous season.
