Diver on bottom for 36 hours

Telethon was not the only cause inspiring Christchurch people to money-earning marathons late last week — two diver members of the Marine Explorers’ Club hope they have raisea about $lOOO for the Canterbury recompression chamber fund.

David Blake and Robert Greeve both donned aqualung gear and plunged to the bottom of the diving pool at Queen Elizabeth II Park at noon on Thursday. Sixteen hours later Mr Greeve was forced to surface for good — he had been hit by influenza and had to give in. But Mr Blake stayed down, except for the five

minutes every hour in which the divers came up for new air-tanks and any other essential attentions to their basic comfort. Mr Blake finally left the diving pool at midnight on Friday after 36 hours underwater. Club officials are now wondering if Mr Blake will be able to claim a record for his feat. They

say there is no record tor underwater endurance of this type in the “Guiness Book of Records.” However, any claim might well be defeated by the efforts of an Auckland diver who has spent several days at the bottom of a hotel swimming-pool as part of a fund-raising effort for Telethon.
