Mairehau H.S. wins vital match

Mairehau High School won a vital, top-of-the-tabie match against Mairehau A in the Christchurch flrst division women’s basketball competition on Saturday. It was a fast, open, running encounter but put little emphasis on defensive skills.

Mairehau High School started to good effect when Donna Broughton helped to set up play from a mid-court position and worked the ball to Rayne Cassidy, who scored frequently with variety of shots. Mairehau High’s 10-point lead was reduced to six (33-27) by half-time. Mairehau A closed the gap to four points (39-35) but Mairehau High rallied and maintained its grip on the match. Jeanette Howard, the Canterbury' and New Zealand representative, played one of her best games, scoring 30 points. Ravne Cassidy scored 20 points.

Mairehau High School’s coach. Mr K. E. Williams, described the contest as one of the best competition matches seen at Cowles Stadium for some time. The team effort by all plavers. in particular, that of Verna Cassedy and Donna Broughton, pleased Mr Williams. For Mairehau A, Marv Pastier failed to use her height well, but Jacky Cook shot many nice baskets for 12 points. Jenny Armstrong quietly scored 16 points.

University A 70, Rangiora 41. Rangiora A surprised University by' playing more as a team and deserved its 32-27 lead at half-time. However, University’s depth proved too much in the

end. Canterbury’s Allison Wright drove well for 18 points. As usual, Kim Smith (Rangiora! managed a good tally, scoring 23 points.

Rebels 54, United A 51 A fi Ee second-half rally saw United almost gain its first competition win, but it lost the match in the last few minutes b »*ketball by both Ee Warne and Valerie Young, for Rebels, both made good use of the ball that came their way. United relied heavily on Heather Carr’s snooting accuracy to keep it in the match.
