Desert Road reopened
Waiouru < The Desen Road was re- 1 opened to traffic early on l Saturday morning after workmen had toiled through i the night to move snow drifts and make the highway passable. The Waiouru police, how-
ever, urged motorists toi exercise extreme ( care in negotiating the road. The Taihape police said i that the highway between < the township and Waicuru was still extremely hazard- > ous, with a great deal of A-, e ’ on many bends and especia’ -
lly at Mulways comer, about 13km north of Taihape. Heavy frosts were reported in both centres, and the Gentle Annie Road between Taihape and Napier was still closed because of snow and ice. Marton awoke on Satur-
day morning to one of the heaviest frosts of the year, but road conditions were reported to be good, although care had to be taken in places because of ice.
The road to the Chateau was the last to be reopened, yesterday morning.
