Care of catchment
A major role of the North Canterbury Catchment Board is to preserve the upper reaches of the Waimakariri River as a source of groundwater supplying the Christchurch aquifers, says the board’s regional water engineer (Mr M. J. Bowden). Mr Bowden was addressing the first of six sessions arranged by the Combined Canterbury Water Groups to discuss the Waimakariri River catchment. Other sessions will discuss
the effects of people on th river, and its present an future uses.
The major importance t the Waimakariri River wj its proximity to Chnstchurc and the extremely hig quality of water in its uppi reaches, Mr Bowden said.
It was important to tl Christchurch water suppl that any work contemplati did not interfere with tl flow leaving the river in i upper reaches, he said.
