Mr Muldoon at Blenheim

Sir, — H. R. Peers (June 20) welcome to the circus, Mr Muldoon says it is free. And surely anyone with a sense of humour would laugh at his quick reply on the question of abortion. The Prime Minister has never promised miracles; surely you are mixing your leaders. And he has never stooped to such low personalities as “a twisted mind and a twisted face” — the result of an accident or operation, I don’t know which, but Mr Muldoon was big enough to ignore it. — Yours, etc., J. CHRISTIE June 22, 1978. Sir, — Miss D. J. Brown says that I have no explanation why many young people go overseas, and she claims it is because they are dissatisfied with conditions here. For Miss Brown’s informa-

tion, many thousands of young people left New Zealand during Labour’s term also, which proves the point. Most go for adventure, experience, to further their studies, etc. But I notice by far the majority return a year or two later. What advantages are there in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, Europe? Only much higher unemployment, higher living costs, overcrowding. Bright lights and night life, alternative life styles, etc., attract the young. A few, no doubt, go because they are dissatisfied with things here and are probably running away, rather than facing the problems here and working hard to improve our country. — Yours, etc., C. G. MARSHALL. June 23, 1978. [This correspondence is now closed. — Editor.]
