Close basketball to Checkers

Checkers narrowly defeated Y.M.C.A., 62-60. in the tenth round of the Canterbury first division men’s basketball championship at Cowles Stadium last evening. It was a particularly tense encounter and the outcome was in doubt until the final hooter. Y.M.C.A. led. 30-25, at half-time and it was not until after 14min of the second half that Checkers managed to level the scores at 50-all,. The scores were level again at 54-all and, with a minute to play, 58-al! Then two quick fouls gave Checkers the points it needed to break the deadlock.

Jaks-High School Old Boys scored a century of points in beating University and Mairehau easily accounted for Burnside. Championship points are: Jak«H. 50.8. 18. Checkers 18, Mairehau 14 Y.M.C.A. 6. Burn--1 side 4, Aranul 4, University 0.

In the women’s first division matches. Checkers produced a remarkable second-half performance to beat University. 48-26. Only two points separated the teams at half-time. Results:— Men
