Chch juniors sweep runs
Christchurch runners fared best in the junior ranks in! the New Zealand secondary! schools’ cross-country championships at Timaru on Sat-| urday. D. Ellis, B. Baxter, and M. | Kolfs (all Burnside High; School) dashed to an early' lead in the junior boys’! 400 m run over a testing,! muddy course and were hever seriously challenged. By the half-way stage Ellis and Baxter were the main contenders while Kolfs was several metres in arrears. With 900 m to run on a slight incline, Ellis took the initiative and opened up; a small gap which he! extended on the third to last hurdle. He went on to win in 15min 40.5 s from Baxter : (15:52) and Kolfs (15:59). Burnside High School took the teams’ race. Alison Taylor (St Cuthberty's College, Auckland) had too much pluck for her. fellow junior girls and clocked 12min 12.5 s to take first place. A strong Canter-! bury contingent followed' her, F. Harnett (Sacred! Heart) coming second (13:22)1

his lead to about 50m and held on to win. Marychurch finished second and Stone third. The best Canterbury contestant, R. van Palk (St Thomas’), finished ninth. Last year’s champion, Heather Carmichael (Epsom Girls’ Grammar School) again won the girls’ senior title.
