Situation: A complex low pressure area extends from the eastern Tasman Sea across New Zealand and the Chatham Islands: a trough is moving eastwards over the Tasman and will cross New Zealand today and tonight; behind the trough colder southerlies will again spread over New Zealand. Forecast: Canterbury: Light winds at first, but freshening southwesterlies spreading north during the afternoon; rain in the Alps spreading east with the south-westerlies; cold again. 'Marlborough: Light or moderate variable winds.

Nelson: Moderate northerlies, with some showers; cloud thickening during the day and more general rain developing.
